Need some room to roam indoors? Here are some of our favorite climate-controlled spaces to explore.Also remember:

* The kid’s spaces at MoMA, the Met, Natural History Museum and other museums also offer excellent drop-in fun. Tax-deductible memberships allow frequent creative play all year long starting at less than $100.

* Check out a range of drop-in classes and weekly storytimes. Some semester-only classes offer free or discounted trial classes.

Apple Seeds

The 2,500+ square foot, very clean, well-designed NYC-themed play area has soft gym equipment, slides, a kid-sized taxi, a deli with plastic fruit and vegetables, a huge Lego table and more.

Membership includes unlimited, seven-days-a-week access to the indoor playground for all kids in a family and up to five different grown-up relatives or caregivers, plus discounts on classes, special events and complimentary guest passes for first-time Apple Seeds visitors.

Children’s Museum of the Arts (CMA)

This delightful, inviting space features self guided art exploration for ages 10 months-15 years. Experiment with sculpture, paints, textiles, sound design, animation, and clay in daily open workshops led by teaching artists and explore rotating exhibitions by established and emerging contemporary artist.

Drive a truck, ride a horse, do wall puzzles and romp through the jungle gyms, slides, and bouncy surfaces of this modern, clean 1,500 square-foot indoor playground. Includes a separate tumble gym and a special area for babies 12 months and under. Plus a good excuse to brunch/get cronuts in one of our favorite neighborhoods.

City Treehouse

Small but enchanting, this playspace has a two-story tree house with slides and caves, plus a water table with jets and water wheels.

On Monday & Wednesday mornings, Downtown Dance Factory’s large sun-drenched studio is transformed into an indoor playground for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, complete with colorful mats, a cool ball pit, adventure-filled tunnels, wonderful books, building blocks, and fun ride-on toys. Drop-in, no registration necessary.


DiMenna Children’s History Museum

Ride an orphan train or play a newsies video game in the awesome DiMenna Children’s History Museum in the basement of the New-York Historical Society. Hands-on exhibits tell the life stories of diverse youngsters who lived in New York City from the late seventeenth through the twentieth centuries. The rest of the museum is also fun and fascinating for all ages to explore and often features interactive kid-friendly exhibits.

Discovery Programs Playpark

Discovery Programs’ spacious gym is open for free play once a week. Youngsters 6-48 months can run, jump, tumble and play.

Elliott’s Gymnastics

MoMA Art Lab: Nature

Visitors of all ages can discover how artists and designers are inspired by the natural world in a new multisensory installation. Beautiful discovery boxes contain creative activities related to seashells, grass, butterflies, etc. inspired by works in the galleries. Also lots of gorgeous books, building toys and multimedia projects that appeal to all ages (including this mom – I made a cool flower-inspired chair prototype). Great play spot for bad weather days (or good weather – it’s right next to the sculpture garden). All ages welcome.
