This mega-hit musical take on The Wizard of Oz tells the backstory of the the misunderstood, green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West and bubbly popular Glinda. Their initial rivalry turns in an unlikely friendship as they discover that the labels good and evil can be misused. Memorable pop-sounding songs, a large cast in spectacular costumes and extravagant sets entertain all ages.

⏱ 2 hours and 45 minutes with one intermission
💥 A giant winged dragon and flying monkeys are a bit scary, along with the menacing fake head of the Wizard. Expect some startling noises. The plot is a bit political and complex for very young kids, but the show keeps moving with humor and over-the-top numbers.
⚠️ The book the musical is based on has a lot of sex and is not for kids.

🎟 Enter the digital lottery for $59 tickets the week before 11 am the day of the show.
🎟 $89+ tickets usually available at TodayTix.
🎟 Booster seats are available on a first come first serve basis. Ask an usher when you arrive.
🎟 If you’re flexible, check gametime.com and other ticketing apps for last minute deals.

🎥 Familiarity with the 1939 Wizard of Oz is not necessary but adds to the enjoyment. Check out the 1978 Wiz for an urban take on the classic story (starring Michael Jackson & Diana Ross) or the  2015 live TV version.

Heckscher Playground

Central Park’s largest playground features a shaded area with swings and slides, a large, maze-like climbers, seasonal water features, sloped turf, a large sandbox area, low monkey bars, tunnels, ramps and (our favorite) giant rocks to climb. Plus a spacious bathroom.

Face painters, musicians and giant bubble makers often congregate at the entrance.
