Watch skaters – or skate yourself on the city’s only free rink. Online advance reservations required.  Dates for skating reservations roll out daily two weeks before skate time.

* Skate rentals are $15-$45; discounted during off-peak hours and dates. Helmets also availble ($6).  Penguin skate aids available for younger kids ($22, free before 11 am on weekends, and noon on weekdays).

* A small drawstring “shoe bag,” complimentary with skate rentals, or a small backpack can be worn onto the ice for shoes and small personal items, or bring your own drawstring bag or backpack under 16”x18”. For larger items, purchase bag check online ($5-$15). No lockers this year.

* Reserve 10-minute sessions of speedy, spinny, inflatable battery-operated bumper cars on ice ($20-$25, ages 7+, 42” or taller,) though February 28 (Monday – Friday: 2pm – 8pm, Saturday – Sunday: 11am – 5pm). Tickets released daily for two weeks in advance and sell out quickly.

* Pick up all sorts of international food and watch ice skaters at open-air The Lodge, plus koisks and booths throughout the park, or visit beloved Swedish bakery Ole & Steen or French patisserie Angelina Paris, both at Sixth Ave & 40th Street.

* Reserve a Cozy Igloos or dome at the Curling Café & Bar for a special meal.

* Ride the small, charming Le Carrousel specially created to complement the park’s French classical style, with brightly colored animals and French cabaret music (11 am-7 pm daily, $3/ride).

* Special events include Ice Theatre of New York pop up concerts on the rink Tuesday-Thursday 1 pm, Wednesday evening Radio Rewind retro tunes for skating, juggling demos, bumper cars on ice coming in February and more.

The Rink at Rockefeller Center

This urban rink is one of the smallest and most expensive in the city, but the iconic location is pure magic. Mostly outdoors, but admission is through the indoor skate house.

Admission varies by day and time as much as $30, so go early in the day, week and season if you can.
