Explore film, TV and video games from nineteenth century optical toys to the latest in digital art with lots of hand-on exhibits in a spacious, modern building.

* The hands-on core exhibition Behind the Screen features over 1,400 artifacts, from mind-bending optical toys to a real Chewbacca mask from the Star Wars films, footage of silent adventure classic The Great Train Robbery as well as chances make stop-motion animations, add sound effects and music to famous movie scenes, and star in a personalized flipbook.

* Visit Miss Piggy, Elmo and other favorites in Jim Henson’s World. See 47 puppets, character sketches, storyboards, scripts, photographs, and iconic costumes. See film and television clips and behind-the-scenes footage.

* In envisioning 2001: Stanley Kubrick’s Space Odyssey, explore Kubrick’s influences, his obsessive research, and his innovative production process in envisioning a world of the future—the year 2001 from the viewpoint of the 1960s. Original artifacts include concept sketches, costumes, storyboards, test films and photographs related to the Stargate special effects sequence.

* The third floor and some of the museum’s interactive elements are currently closed.

* Screenings in a limited capacity, gorgeous, raked-seats theater must be purchased separately.  Look out for family friendly classics from the Muppets to Studio Ghibli .

* Strollers and backpacks are not permitted in the galleries; free coat check is available. Baby-changing stations located in the Education Center restrooms on the first floor.

A café located in lobby serves sandwiches, snacks, and beverages, or visit local restaurants nearby offering a diverse range of dining options – we love Venezuelan Arepas Cafe.

The Muppet Movie

See Kermit  sing “Rainbow Connection” in this 1979 road picture filled with cameo appearances, running gags, and Academy Award–nominated music by Paul Williams. Features Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, and Gonzo and more favorites.

Also at 3 pm.

Add on admission to the museum galleries and see Muppet memorabilia and puppets for $5.

Mozart for Munchkins: Astoria

Dance and clap to a mix of classical, jazz, and sing-along favorites while meeting the clarinet and cello at an outdoor, socially distanced interactive concert curated for little ones and their grown-ups.

Attendance is very limited. Bring your own blanket and park it 6 feet from your neighbor.
