Suggested Ages: All, Adult Friendly

$25/adults, $18/seniors, $14/students, free/ages 16 & under

Always exciting and decidedly kid-friendly, the Museum of Modern Art has spacious galleries and engaging exhibits.

* Feel the joy of the rainbow Sol Lewitt murals, find a helicopter in a stairwell and see modern masterpieces including paintings by Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh along with works by more contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock,  Jean-Michel Basquiat and Faith Ringgold.

* Lounge on Eames chairs in the Sculpture Garden and make wishes from the fountain bridges.

* The interactive Family Art Lab: Line, Shape, Color has re-opened! Work with wire, design emoji, engage in light-box play, and more in this all-ages, hands-on space.

* In Matisse: The Red Studio, a foundational work of modern art is reunited with surviving six paintings, three sculptures, and one ceramic by Matisse depicted on its six-foot-tall-by-seven-foot-wide canvas. A creative space within the exhibition invites visitors of all ages to draw, write, and reflect on the spaces and colors that inspire them.

* Lots of resources for families including downloadable kids audio and activity guides. Look for art labels designed for kids throughout Floors 2, 4, and 5. The beloved art lab is sadly currently closed, but join virtual live and recorded programs and find lots of art-inspired activities online.

* Stroller-friendly everywhere; changing tables in most bathrooms. No tickets to access most of the first floor, including the Sculpture Garden – lounge in comfy chairs and use the clean bathrooms anytime you need a break in midtown.

* Open only for members & guests on Mondays mornings. Annual memberships start at just $65 and include tons of perks.

🛍 The gift shop is a treasure trove of well-designed toys books and art supplies – plus cool houseware and gadgets for grown-ups.

🍽 Dine on handmade pastas, cured salumi, artisanal cheeses, panini, salads, soups, and desserts at communal tables at casual Café 2. The menu is more limited but includes mac n’ cheese in the sixth-floor Terrace Café, with  indoor and (weather-permitting) outdoor dining. To-go items available in the Sculpture Garden in the summer.

🌳 Lots of room to roam, plus fun shops, roller skating and food options at nearby Rockefeller Center. Or head seven blocks north to Central Park and the destination Heckscher Playground.

Art Alive

Join an intergenerational drop-in gallery visit and art-making experience. Each session, a practicing artist or artist educator focuses on a work on view in MAD’s current exhibitions, leading hands-on activities and engaging discussions geared towards an intergenerational audience.

Discussions and activities are ongoing; join at any time.

Heckscher Playground

Central Park’s largest playground features a shaded area with swings and slides, a large, maze-like climbers, seasonal water features, sloped turf, a large sandbox area, low monkey bars, tunnels, ramps and (our favorite) giant rocks to climb. Plus a spacious bathroom.

Face painters, musicians and giant bubble makers often congregate at the entrance.
