Experience Little Italy in the Bronx with a variety of food vendors, filled-to-order cannolis and old-school atmosphere. We love the prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, eggplant parm and roasted peppers at Mike's Deli; order in advance by phone to skip the often long line. Eat at indoor tables next to elderly gentlemen hand-rolling (but not smoking) cigars or take a picnic to the nearby New York Botanical Garden or Bronx Zoo.
Saturday, November 16
Honor the indigenous wisdom of companion planting by sampling in crafts that use corn husks, winter squash, and climbing beans, the Three Sisters in Seneca tradition. Enjoy storytime and nature-inspired art projects in a historic house among gorgeous gardens and trees overlooking the Hudson River. Note the parking lot is under construction, free shuttles from Metro-North's Riverdale Station, the 242nd Street stop on the #1 subway line, and a free offsite parking lot.
Sunday, November 17
Enjoy a program featuring members of the Bronx Opera accompanied by solo piano in the luxurious parlor of a historic mansion. Online registration requested.
Saturday, November 23
Immerse yourself in lush gardens and vibrant art of Brazilian legend Roberto Burle Marx, whose powerful modernist vision produced thousands of gardens and landscapes, including the famous curving mosaic walkways at Copacabana Beach in Rio and the beautiful rooftop garden at Banco Safra in São Paulo. Feel his artistic energy and love of plants during a Garden-wide exhibition of bold gardens; paintings, drawings, and textiles; and the sights and sounds of Brazil that inspired his life and work.
Friday, December 6
Enjoy a free concert from local musicians, explore a 19th century mansion and frolic in the large, lovely garden. Light refreshments available or bring a picnic. Hop on a free old-fashioned trolley that makes an hourly loop from the #6 Pelham Bay Park subway station to Bartow-Pell to scenic City Island.
