Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers at this annual world-wide musical celebration of the summer solstice. Some highlights this year include a block party at Joe’s Pub (Astor Place Plaza, 1-7 pm) four-hand piano on Pier I (Riverside Park at 70th Street, 4:30-7pm), family-friendly Brazilian music & jazz by NYU faculty (Bleecker & Mercer, 5p-8pm), a tribute to the “Viking of 6th Avenue” street musician Moondog (Sixth Avenue & 54th Street, 6-7:40pm), mass gatherings of guitars, french horns, harmonicas, mandolins and much more. Look at the online map to see what’s playing in your neighborhood.
Also look for colorful Sing For Hope pianos around town.
