Explore how to convey values, histories, and experiences and share them with others through symbols on flags. Use mixed media to construct a personalized family flag. Draw inspiration from the way Hans Haacke uses familiar symbols to critique institutions and consider how Haacke alters the American flag in his artwork “State of the Union” (2005) to express his opposition to US policies during the Iraq War.
Part of a monthly program. Recommended for families with children aged between four and twelve years.
Includes free New Museum admission for two adults per family (under eighteen always admitted free). Space is limited, and tickets given out first-come, first-served.
Adventures from The Shed
Talented Chickenshed teaching artists lead preschoolers and their families through an immersive and inclusive performance with puppetry, music, movement, storytelling and a bit of American Sign Language. Very interactive and lots of fun.
