Based on Tim Burton’s dearly beloved film, this irreverent musical tells the story of an unusual teenager whose whole life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a zany demon with a thing for stripes. A catchy pop score, an astonishing set, cool special effects and a hilarious titular character make this a favorite for tweens who can handle innuendo and dark humor. Under its uproarious surface, a remarkably touching show about family, love, and making the most of every Day-O.
Note there is a big divergence on opinions as to the appropriateness of this musical for kids; it is light-hearted about heavy subjects. Watch the opening number to understand the tone.
2 hours 30 minutes with one intermission
🤬 Some strong language including multiple f-bombs. References to drug use – he does a line of cocaine in the opening song. Mentioned of orgies, herpes, boners, etc., but all as silly jokes that will go over most kids’ heads (ex, Beetlejuice says “you give me a boner” and hands over a femur).
💥 A black comedy about death. Show starts with a teen dealing with grief and suicidal feelings after her mom dies. Some startling moments.
❤️ The title character is horny and sexually harasses the Maitlands as a running gag (in a light-hearted way). Child marriage is a plot point but portrayed as an awful thing based on obligation, not any attraction.
