Drop-in Classes

Need some music, art, gym or animal time, but afraid of committing to long-term and usually expensive semesters? Some of our favorite drop-in classes:
* The kid’s spaces at MoMA, the Met, Natural History Museum and other museums also offer excellent drop-in fun. Tax-deductible memberships allow frequent creative play all year long starting at less than $100.
* Some semester-only classes offer free or discounted trial classes.
* Many spaces & classes offer occasional introductory deals. Subscribe to our email list or like us on Facebook and we’ll let you know when they come up.

Saturday Art Workshops at Scandinavia House

Each Saturday morning, Scandinavia House presents arts and storytelling for children. Work with Nordic themes in the Halldór Laxness Library, including exhibition-related workshops for The Experimental Self: Edvard Munch’s Photography in January.

Ages 2.5 to 5 can play in the fascinating Discovery Room, then explore a natural science or cultural topic with a story, song, and visit with a worksheet to a related Museum Hall. One of our favorite NYC activities. We even made it in the website’s photos. Two sessions at 10:15 & 11:15 am. Note new ticketing procedure – tickets are distributed on a designated line outside the 81st Street Planetarium Entrance between 9:45 and 10:15 am.

Jem Yoga Story Time

Explore the mind and body practice of yoga in this fun caregiver/child class. Each week read two stories (one active and one calming) to inspire a yoga journey and breathing exercises, yoga poses and creative ways to find calm. Expect music, props and fun.

In Tummy Time, newborns to crawlers work on milestones through songs, nursery rhymes, and exercises designed to strengthen muscles and provide mental stimulation. In Crawlers Club, Tummy Time “graduates” continue to reach new developmental milestones in a community of first friends. Wobbly Walkerse explore movement in an environment that supports early socialization through songs, exercises and play.

Creative Play for Kids

These classes are unique blends of fun developmentally-based activities including music, storytime and dance held in the preschool area of a church. Monday classes feature a different live instrument each week – a typical class might have singing, stretching, playing with a parachute and reading about trains accompanied by a trombone player. Thursday classes include more age-specific developmental activities.

Community Cowpokes with Hopalong Andrew: Tribeca

Sing along with Hopalong Andrew, an award-winning musician and former NYC Urban Park Ranger who adapts classic cowboy songs to reflect life as an urban cowpoke. His 1-man band (guitar, banjo, harmonica, and suitcase drum kit) performances encourages participation and interaction, creating a fun and positive space for play, music and rhythm training and social interaction.

Experience a new opera for babies that uses parachutes to create an intimate world of wonder and interaction. Designed and performed by Moving Star Vocal Ensemble, the performance invites audiences into an expanding and contracting world and immerses them in a parachute’s movements as it becomes a metaphor for breathing. For babies and toddlers age two or younger; not recommended for older children.

Thirty blocks of Broadway from Times Square to Union Square will be car-free in honor of Earth Day. Enjoy live music, family-friendly dance and fitness workshops, crafts, dance performances and environmental programming promoting activism and education at six rest stops: Times Square (42nd Street and Broadway), Garment (38th Street and Broadway), Herald Square (34th Street and Broadway), City Zone (26th Street and Broadway), Union Square (17th Street and Broadway) and Flatiron (23rd Street and Broadway), which will feature a 36-foot bouquet of flowers. Also happening in Washington Heights (St. Nicholas Avenue from 181st Street to 190th Street) and Downtown Brooklyn (Albee Square).
