Drop-in Classes
Need some music, art, gym or animal time, but afraid of committing to long-term and usually expensive semesters? Some of our favorite drop-in classes:

* The kid’s spaces at MoMA, the Met, Natural History Museum and other museums also offer excellent drop-in fun. Tax-deductible memberships allow frequent creative play all year long starting at less than $100.

* Some semester-only classes offer free or discounted trial classes.

* Many spaces & classes offer occasional introductory deals. Subscribe to our email list or like us on Facebook and we’ll let you know when they come up.

ABC Do-Re-ME! Musical Playdate

Musicians play piano or guitar and sing favorite kids songs. Some teachers are more engaging and entertaining than others, so ask around and try different class times. Kids up to five-years-old sing along, play instruments, dance with scarves and other sometimes-silly activities in a dance studio in the basement. Advanced registration required, though cancellations are allowed up to 1 hour before the class with no penalty.

Drop-in art, music, and movement classes incorporate educational best practices (and are also lots of fun). Outdoor classes offered in the summer.


Moosiki Kids Music Class

Interactive “grownup-and-me” style music classes for adults and children ages 4 months to 3 years blend traditional musical learning with a more relaxed, rock-and-roll style. Features parachute, puppets, and other various props.

Talented educators provide creative and inspiring experiences in this easy-to-navigate community marketplace for kids’ classes. Diverse class options include music, dance, fencing, beat boxing, Capoeira, cooking and Jedi Lightsaber Training and venues throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn.


The Art Farm in the City

A variety of classes for ages 1-8 include cooking, arts/crafts, music, singing and cuddling time with live animals.



Gateway Storytime

Monday 10:15 am–12:00 pm

Free with museum admission (suggested $22/ages 12-65, $12.50/ages 2-12, $17/students & seniors free/ages 2 & under)

Ages 2.5 to 5 can play in the fascinating Discovery Room, then explore a natural science or cultural topic with a story, song, and visit with a worksheet to a related Museum Hall. One of our favorite NYC activities. We even made it in the website’s photos. Two sessions at 10:15 & 11:15 am. Note new ticketing procedure – tickets are distributed on a designated line outside the 81st Street Planetarium Entrance between 9:45 and 10:15 am.


Chocolate Story Time

Chocolatiers read about chocolate, how it is made from the seeds of the cacao tree, the people who grow this wonderful tree and the countries that play an important role in growing cacao and producing chocolate, then kids one unique chocolate lollipop.


Yoga Storytime

Yogis up to five years old can enjoy free yoga-themed story-times with puppets and thematic poses.


Discovery Program Baby Social

Babies 6 weeks to 8 months old and their caregivers are invited to Discovery Programs’ spacious gymnasium for unstructured play with manipulatives and toys accompanied by a live guitarist.

Join CMA’s WEE teaching artists for art-filled drop-in sessions featuring music, storytime, and lots of materials and techniques to explore. Stay and explore the museum after for $6 more.


Sing-along with The Buttons

Through a mixture of classic children’s songs, favorite oldies and their own original songs, Brooklyn-based duo The Buttons create a high energy, joyful singalong that inspires participants to move their bodies, use their imaginations, observe the world around them, and learn new things.


Community Cowpokes with Hopalong Andrew: Tribeca

Sing along with Hopalong Andrew, an award-winning musician and former NYC Urban Park Ranger who adapts classic cowboy songs to reflect life as an urban cowpoke. His 1-man band (guitar, banjo, harmonica, and suitcase drum kit) performances encourages participation and interaction, creating a fun and positive space for play, music and rhythm training, and vibrant social interaction.
